The recent wave of shootings across the United States has left communities in shock and mourning. From Ohio to New York, these tragic incidents have claimed lives and left many others injured, overshadowing what should have been joyous celebrations.
The violence began in Ohio, where a deadly confrontation in Rittman left three people dead, including a police sergeant and a teenage girl. The incident, which occurred on July 5, 2026, saw officers responding to a 911 call about a break-in and shots fired. Upon arrival, they were met with immediate gunfire, resulting in the death of Rittman Police Sgt. Scott Ries, a 10-year veteran, and two civilians, Christine McWilliams, 44, and McKinley McWilliams, 13. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Brandon Fazekas, also died at the scene.
The Coney Island Barbecue Shooting
In New York, a masked gunman opened fire at a family barbecue in Brooklyn’s Coney Island, wounding eight people, including four children. The shooting, which took place late Saturday, left a 21-year-old woman in critical condition after being shot in the chest. The victims, ranging in age from 6 to 14, were taken to nearby hospitals, with all four children expected to survive.
The preliminary investigation suggests that an unknown man dressed in all black and wearing a black ski mask approached the fence line along Surf Avenue and fired multiple rounds into the courtyard where the barbecue was taking place. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted that there was no indication of any argument or altercation before the shooting occurred. A TEC-9-style firearm equipped with an extended magazine was recovered at the scene, along with 10 spent shell casings. No one has been arrested.
Fourth of July Violence Across the Country
The Fourth of July holiday was marred by violence in multiple cities, leaving at least six people dead and scores injured. In Florida, a 19-year-old was killed and six others were wounded by gunfire in downtown Pensacola. The shooting, which appeared targeted, left the youngest victim at just 16 years old.
In Indiana, a shooting in Fort Wayne left one woman dead and eight adults injured. Meanwhile, in Gary, a 10-year-old boy was killed in a separate shooting. The boy and a 50-year-old man were taken to a hospital, with the boy later pronounced dead. The 50-year-old remains in critical condition.
In California, a woman and a man were killed, and three others were injured at a large Fourth of July party in Compton. The victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the injured were taken to hospitals. In Dayton, Ohio, four people were injured in a shooting in the Oregon District, a neighborhood known for its nightlife and restaurants.
Some tragedies unfolded closer to home. In Canton, Ohio, a 46-year-old woman was shot in the back while asleep in bed after a man and others reportedly fired weapons into the air and set off fireworks to celebrate the holiday. The suspect, Darius J. Leishman, 24, was arrested and charged with felonious assault and improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation.
In St. Louis, Missouri, a 17-year-old boy was killed in a shooting around 12 a.m. Saturday. Two other victims, both 16-year-old boys, were dropped off at a hospital with gunshot wounds. In Memphis, a 20-year-old man was shot and killed by two National Guard members following a foot pursuit that also involved Memphis police officers.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, which is investigating the shooting, said in a news release that the victim had reportedly fired shots in the area and was fleeing Memphis police. National Guard members on assignment in the area joined the pursuit, TBI said. The victim was identified as Tyrin Johnson.
In Chino, California, a fireworks explosion killed one person and critically injured two others. Police responding to a reported vehicle fire found that the blast, believed to have been caused by a large quantity of ignited fireworks, had injured several people. Three adults were hospitalized with severe injuries; one, a woman in her 20s, later died.
Derion Tradon James Jr., 28, of Hesperia, was detained and booked on an involuntary manslaughter charge. Chino police said the case will be submitted to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office for review; the investigation is ongoing.
In Beaufort County, South Carolina, four people were arrested in connection with a July 4 shooting on Coligny Beach. Officers were dispatched to the area after receiving multiple calls regarding gunshots. Seven people were shot and are believed to have non-life-threatening injuries. The victims were all taken to various hospitals.
The sheriff’s office said the shooting stemmed from a fight between two groups, and during the altercation, shots were fired. Two 17-year-old boys and an 18-year-old were arrested and charged with attempted murder and other crimes. Another 17-year-old was charged with accessory after the fact.
