This senseless act of violence has left the community in shock and authorities determined to bring the perpetrator to justice.
The incident occurred around 10:37 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, 2026 in the courtyard of a residence near the intersection of West 30th Street and Surf Avenue just a short distance from the famed Riegelmann Boardwalk. The victims, ranging in age from 6 to 37, were enjoying a family gathering when the gunman approached and fired multiple rounds into the courtyard.

The victims include a 37-year-old man a 33-year-old man a 21-year-old woman a 25-year-old woman and four children aged 6, 7, 12, and 14. Among them, the 21-year-old woman is in critical condition after being shot in the chest. The other seven victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are currently stable.
The gunman, described as an unknown male dressed in all black and wearing a black ski mask approached the fence line along Surf Avenue and fired multiple rounds into the courtyard. The Investigation and the Evidence
The NYPD has recovered a TEC-9-style firearm equipped with an extended magazine, along with 10 discharged shell casings from the scene. Detectives are investigating whether the shooting is connected to a gang-related homicide that occurred earlier in the week on the same block.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that the preliminary investigation indicates there was no dispute at the barbecue before the shooting. The case remains under active investigation, with officers reviewing evidence and interviewing witnesses from the barbecue and surrounding buildings.
The Community Response and Broader Context
The shooting has drawn strong condemnation from city officials. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated, “There is no place for this kind of violence in our city. We will not tolerate it. We will fight it with every single tool at our disposal.” He added, “As we mourn alongside those whose loved ones have been hurt, let us also recommit ourselves to the work of building a city where every celebration is safe and every holiday is joyful.”
Despite this incident, the broader context shows a positive trend in crime statistics. According to NYPD figures, there has been a 25.6% drop in homicides and a 3.3% decline in shooting incidents across New York City compared to the first six months of 2026. Commissioner Tisch described the data as “historic” and “record-breaking,” but emphasized that more work needs to be done to ensure the safety of all residents.
The Coney Island community has expressed concern and sadness over the incident. One neighbor told the New York Post“It’s nothing new over here honestly,” reflecting the repeated incidents in the area. A deli worker at the scene said, “The cops, they say they found a book bag with a gun under the trees. I was scared to be honest. I think there was more than one shooter with so many that hit.”
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The community hopes for a swift resolution and justice for the victims.
