The atmosphere in New York City turned tense on Tuesday night as thousands of Knicks fans gathered to watch Game 3 of the NBA Finals. What began as a celebration of the team’s spirit quickly devolved into chaos, with violent confrontations between fans and law enforcement.
The official watch parties, held at Bryant ParkWollman Rink in Central Park, and Brooklyn Bowlrequired attendees to register online in advance. However, the heightened security around Madison Square Gardendue to President Donald Trump‘s attendance, prevented a watch party outside the arena.
Violence erupts post-game
Following the Knicks’ loss, the mood shifted dramatically. Fans spilled out of Bryant Park onto neighboring streets, leading to fights and disorderly behavior. The situation escalated as crowds flooded 42nd Streetsurrounding and jumping on cars and cabs. Reports indicate that fans used lightsabers and other objects to hit windshields, and some threw beer bottles at officers.
A bus sign was knocked down and later used as a weapon in a fight. The tension reached a boiling point when one individual set fire to a Spurs t-shirtleading to a chase involving San Antonio fans across the street.
Arrests and charges
The New York Police Department (NYPD) reported 21 arrests in total. Eight individuals were charged with offenses including assault on a police officerassaultcriminal possession of a weaponmenacingresisting arrestand obstructing governmental administration. Additionally, thirteen others were issued criminal court summonses for disorderly conduct.
Patrick Hendry, President of the Police Benevolent Association (PBA)released a statement condemning the behavior. He described the events as a shameful display and called for stronger messages from elected leaders to prevent such incidents in the future.
Enhanced security measures
In response to the unrest, NYPD officials announced plans to replicate the security perimeter used on Monday night for Game 4. Major streets bordering Madison Square Garden will be closed, preventing crowds from blocking traffic as they did outside Bryant Park. A watch party for Game 4 will be allowed outside the arena but will be contained within the security perimeter, complete with New Year’s Eve-style checkpoints and penning.
The events of Tuesday night serve as a stark reminder of the potential for chaos during high-stakes sporting events. As New York City braces for the next game, authorities are taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of both fans and law enforcement.
In a separate incident, five people were injured in a stabbing at Penn Station on Sunday evening. The attack occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on the NJ Transit concourse. One person suffered a serious injury, two had moderate injuries, and the rest had minor injuries. They were all taken to Bellevue Hospital. The suspect, considered emotionally disturbed, was arrested by Amtrak police. The circumstances surrounding the stabbing remain unknown.
