Since its inception, the 5 for $5 book club has expanded significantly. Initially, it was already well-known, but I was eager to contribute to its structure. My primary goal was to provide students with ongoing opportunities to immerse themselves in literature throughout the school year. Today, we have tripled the number of participants, and I remain optimistic about this trend. Our aim is to empower students to explore books that pique their interests, ultimately cultivating a lifelong love for reading.
Personal favorites and their impact
As a librarian, I have encountered countless books, making it challenging to select just one favorite. Reflecting on my childhood, Wrinkle in Time was a formative read during my middle school years. Transitioning into young adulthood, the Harry Potter series captured my imagination. Most recently, I found profound enjoyment in James, a modern retelling of Huckleberry Finn. Each of these works has significantly influenced my life, similar to cherished memories associated with family. Choosing a single favorite feels akin to selecting a favorite family member; each has left an indelible mark on my journey.
Shifts in reading habits
Over the years, I have observed notable changes in how students engage with literature and utilize library resources. One encouraging trend is the increased interest in reading among students. This year, I have witnessed a surprising uptick in the checkout of classic literature, a genre I initially believed would not captivate younger audiences. Additionally, genres such as romance and mystery continue to thrive, showcasing the diverse reading preferences of our students. It is heartening to see how these preferences have influenced our library’s organization, facilitating the discovery of books that resonate with them.
Enhancements and future plans for the library
In my efforts to create an inviting and functional space, I have restructured the library layout, introduced new titles, and implemented organizational systems tailored to student interests. Moving forward, one of my primary objectives is to further optimize the library’s setup and potentially increase shelf space to accommodate our expanding collection. An exciting initiative on the horizon is the introduction of literature subscription boxes, inspired by the popular Book of the Month concept. With funding through the Mother’s Club Grant, students will soon be able to subscribe and receive curated boxes containing a book along with engaging activities and themed items, such as tea bags and crafts.
Reflections on past and present
Considering my younger self, I suspect she would be astonished at my current position. As a child, I was deeply passionate about reading, and my first professional experience as a librarian was in a corporate setting. The thought of connecting with high school students daily would have seemed unimaginable to me then. However, I believe my younger self would take pride in my dedication to fostering a love for literature in our students. It is a fulfilling endeavor that continues to evolve alongside the changing landscape of education.
