In the world of college tennis, Lydia Zafeiri stands out not just for her athletic prowess but also for her dedication to leadership and mental health advocacy. As a senior at Queens College and a member of the ITA Student-Athlete CouncilZafeiri has been a driving force in creating positive change within the sport. Her journey is a testament to resilience, passion, and the power of using one’s platform for meaningful impact.
Zafeiri’s story is one of transformation and growth. As an international student from Greece, she found her way to the United States and discovered a passion for tennis that would shape her life in profound ways. Her experiences, both on and off the court, have inspired her to give back to the sport that has given her so much.
From Challenges to Championships
Zafeiri’s collegiate tennis journey was not without its hurdles. Facing coaching shifts and recruiting challenges at her first school, she could have easily become disheartened. However, she chose to take control of her future and ultimately led Queens College to the National Championships. Her message to student-athletes facing tough situations is clear: uncertainty does not mean your story is over; it often means a new chapter is beginning.
She emphasizes the importance of trusting one’s work and staying focused on goals. Zafeiri believes that setbacks can lead to even greater opportunities than one might imagine. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder that resilience and determination can overcome even the most challenging circumstances.
Advocating for Mental Health
One of Zafeiri’s most significant contributions has been her advocacy for mental health. In high-stakes sports, athletes are often conditioned to hide vulnerability. However, Zafeiri has been a vocal advocate for open conversations about mental well-being. She believes that mental health and performance are not separate conversations but are intrinsically linked.
Through her role in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at both of her institutions, Zafeiri has organized initiatives such as Morgan’s Message dedication games and the Hope Walk. These events have created spaces for honest conversations about mental health, making others feel supported and less alone. Zafeiri’s efforts underscore the importance of creating a healthier and more supportive team culture.
Creating Lasting Impact
As the Outreach Chair on the ITA Student-Athlete Council, Zafeiri has spearheaded impactful community initiatives, most notably the Alumni Career Spotlight Series. This series highlights the importance of creating opportunities that connect and inspire others. Zafeiri’s advice to student-athletes looking to make a difference is to find something they are passionate about and look for ways to make a difference, no matter how small the opportunity may seem.
She believes that meaningful change often starts with one conversation, one event, or one idea that brings people together. Through her work, Zafeiri has learned that when student-athletes use their platform with purpose and consistency, they can make a lasting impact that extends far beyond their years of competition. The relationships built and the lives positively influenced often become the most meaningful part of one’s legacy.
The ITA Student-Athlete Council is a committee of student-athletes who play college tennis, assembled to provide insights regarding the sport with a special emphasis on the student-athlete experience. The council’s goals include presenting a student-athlete voice within the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, offering input on matters impacting student-athletes, enhancing the student-athlete experience across all divisions, and creating leadership and professional development opportunities.
