Inside Grant Achterkirch’s WIAC football season and personal passions

The WIAC Student-Athlete Spotlight runs each Thursday throughout the 2026-27 academic year, featuring a male and a female athlete from the conference’s eight schools. Each interview is supplied by the respective institution and presented in partnership with Culver’s, giving fans a glimpse into the lives of Division III competitors.

One of the latest profiles shines on Grant Achterkirch a senior quarterback for UW-La Crosse football. Hailing from Owatonna, Minnesota, Grant is balancing a Business Management major with a demanding football schedule, while still finding time for his favorite pastimes.

Choosing UW-La Crosse and thriving in the WIAC

When asked why he committed to UW-La Crosse, Grant cited the region’s abundant hunting and fishing opportunities as a major draw. “I love the La Crosse area for getting outdoors,” he said, adding that the chance to play in a reputable World Intercollegiate Athletic Conference program sealed the decision. The WIAC, known for its relentless week-to-week competition, offers no breaks; every matchup feels like a battle, which Grant finds both challenging and rewarding.

Competing at the Division III level, Grant emphasizes that the experience hinges on passion, discipline, and the relationships forged with teammates. “It’s a grind that teaches you more about yourself than any textbook could,” he explained, underscoring the unique culture of UW-La Crosse football within the WIAC framework.

Beyond the field: passions, rituals and personal favorites

Off the gridiron, Grant’s interests reveal a well-rounded personality. He proudly lists his top Culver’s order—the Double Butter Burger—and his favorite “Flavor of the Day,” M&M. Campus life finds a favorite spot in Wittich Hall, while his entertainment preferences range from the TV series Breaking Bad to the Fourth of July celebrations.

When it comes to food, nothing beats buffalo wings with ranch dressing, and his favorite animal is the bear, symbolizing the wilderness he often explores. For scouting game footage he relies on the Reveal Tactacam app, and he enjoys the music of Treaty Oak Revival. As a sports fan, the Minnesota Wild hold a special place in his heart, and a cabin up north serves as his go-to vacation retreat.

One of Grant’s most memorable athletic moments was leading his team on a playoff run the previous season. He also cherishes the simple pleasure of hunting alongside his teammates on off-days, a tradition that blends camaraderie with his love of the outdoors.

Looking forward: career dreams and life lessons

Beyond football, Grant aspires to a career in construction management. His bucket list includes a bighorn-sheep hunt, driving an F1 car, and attending a Metallica concert. He also boasts a non-athletic talent: cooking, a skill he’s quick to showcase for friends and family.

When asked about the ultimate sporting event he’d love to witness, Grant named the Minnesota Wild playing Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. His pre-game ritual is straightforward—a moment of prayer that centers his focus. If his team needed an anthem, Grant would choose “Freebird,” an ode to freedom and perseverance.

Looking ahead to younger athletes, Grant’s advice is succinct: “Enjoy doing hard things with your best friends.” He credits his father as his primary role model, noting that the values taught at home have guided his approach to both sport and life.
