A family of four vanished while flying from the Bahamas to Miami, prompting a desperate search that ended in tragedy. The small plane, a PA-34 Piper aircraft, disappeared from radar on Monday, sparking a frantic search effort by relatives and authorities.
The family, consisting of Mario Lamar 80, his wife Lili Lamar 79, and their grandchildren Sofia Sosa 28, and Christian Sosa 22, were returning home from a trip over the Labor Day weekend. The plane departed from Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands of the Bahamas, bound for Miami Executive Airport.
The desperate search and heartbreaking discovery
The family’s desperate search began when messages to the passengers went unanswered. Relatives took matters into their own hands, launching a search effort that ultimately led to the heartbreaking discovery of the four bodies. The search party included family members who located their loved ones and brought them aboard their own vessels.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed that human remains were recovered and are now in police custody. The remains are expected to be transferred to New Providence the main commercial section of the small Caribbean nation. The U.S. Coast Guard has been assisting in the search efforts, with a Coast Guard plane helping in the search again on Tuesday.
The family’s background and the circumstances of the crash
Mario Lamar the pilot, was a lifelong, very experienced pilot with more than 40 years of experience. He routinely flew to the Bahamas, where he had a second home in Great Harbour Cay. The family described him as a cautious pilot who kept the plane in pristine condition.
Flight data showed the plane was last seen on radar as its speed rapidly fluctuated before its altitude dropped from around 10,000 feet to 3,700 feet in just three minutes. The plane’s path also showed it looped in a circle before it dropped off the radar over the waters off Red Bays. The plane’s path also crossed rough weather near the north end of Andros Island where authorities are now focusing their search efforts.
The victims’ lives and legacies
Sofia Sosa a neonatal physician assistant, had recently graduated from Florida International University with a master’s degree in physician assistant studies. She was known for her dedication to her work and her love for helping others. Her Facebook profile showed her enjoying life in tropical settings and promoting a fundraiser for a childhood cancer charity.
Christian Sosa a sports photographer, had recently graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a marketing degree. He had been doing seasonal freelance work for the Los Angeles Rams and maintained an Instagram account with landscape and nature shots from various national parks. His professors praised him as an amazing young man who lit up every room he walked into.
The family has expressed their profound sadness and gratitude to everyone who supported them, searched alongside them, and kept their family in their prayers. They respectfully ask for privacy as they mourn this unimaginable loss.
