Empowering LGBTQ+ youth through mentorship and community engagement

Learn how mentorship and community can empower LGBTQ+ scholars and advocates in a challenging climate.

The journey of advocating for LGBTQ+ youth has come a long way, especially in a world that’s always changing. My path shifted from music to psychology, and as I moved forward, one goal stood out: to make a real difference in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals. Completing my graduate studies in counseling psychology allowed me to dive deep into the unique challenges these young people face, particularly when it comes to peer socialization and dealing with prejudice. Attending conferences not only provided invaluable support but also helped shape my professional identity and fuel my passion for this meaningful career.

The Role of Mentorship in Shaping Careers

When I think back on my academic journey, I can’t emphasize enough how crucial mentorship has been in my life. The relationships I built during my graduate studies have blossomed into lasting friendships and professional connections. Mentorship doesn’t just happen in graduate school; it’s a thread that weaves through every stage of our careers, including the leap to full professorship. Key figures like Lisa Spanierman and Dorothy Espelage offered unwavering support and invaluable training during my formative years. Their encouragement was further bolstered by mentors like Stephen Russell, Stacey Horn, and Ian Rivers, who guided me during a time when out LGBTQ+ scholars were few and far between. Their belief in my potential has illuminated my path.

As I navigated the world of academia, I was fortunate to find mentors like Arthur Lipkin and Hiro Yoshikawa, who represented the kind of scholars I aspired to become. Their influence has been pivotal, showing me how important it is to have role models who reflect the values we hold dear in our work. The ongoing support from these mentors has not only sharpened my research skills but has also highlighted the significance of community in our collective efforts.

Facing Challenges and Building Resilience

Right now, we’re living in a time marked by increased attacks on LGBTQ+ rights and representation. This hostile environment is a rallying cry for those of us in this field. Timothy Snyder’s insights in “On Tyranny” remind us to be brave in our advocacy. Choosing to step into this challenging arena isn’t just a career move; it’s a stand against the forces that threaten our communities. The urgency of our work has never felt more intense, and while the emotional toll is real, we must draw strength from one another and keep pushing forward.

For anyone stepping into this field, my advice is simple: build relationships with both peers and seasoned scholars. These connections are essential not only for supporting each other’s research and career goals but also for affirming our inherent worth as individuals. Cultivating a strong support network is vital, especially when our communities face challenges. It reinforces the importance of our work.

Cultivating Community in Times of Change

The creation of the SOGIE Caucus has been a game changer in recognizing the informal support networks among LGBTQ+ scholars. It has opened up a platform for collaboration and visibility, fostering a sense of belonging and shared investment in our community. Watching the Caucus grow in both membership and mission has been uplifting, especially as it adapts to meet the challenges we face. The dedication of its members to maintain connections and celebrate each other’s milestones is a powerful testament to our community’s resilience.

Reflecting on the virtual SRCD Biennial in 2021, it’s clear that even in tough times, moments of joy and connection—like the lively performances from the SOGIE Caucus—offer a much-needed break. These events remind us of the creativity and happiness that can thrive, even in difficult situations, and reaffirm the importance of community arts in our advocacy efforts.

Looking ahead, the mission remains crystal clear: we must continue to build and nurture our networks, support one another, and advocate for the rights and recognition of LGBTQ+ individuals in every sphere of life. Together, we can face the challenges ahead with courage and determination, ensuring our voices are heard and our communities are uplifted.
