Deadly highway accident in Indonesia kills 13 returning from wedding celebration

The joyous occasion of a wedding celebration turned into a scene of tragedy on Indonesia’s main island of Java. A pickup truck carrying wedding guests was involved in a fatal collision on a busy highway, resulting in the deaths of 13 people and injuries to five others.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, July 12, near Kiajaran Kulon village in Indramayu regency. The group had just left a wedding in the neighboring village of Parean and was on its way home when the devastating accident took place.

The chain of events leading to the collision

According to local traffic police chief Undang Syarif Hidayat, the victims were traveling in an open-bed pickup truck when the vehicle slowed down near a median opening to make a U-turn on the highway. At that moment, the pickup was struck from behind by a wing-box truck traveling in the same direction.

The force of the initial impact pushed the pickup truck into the opposite lane where it was hit again by another oncoming truck. The powerful collision caused more than a dozen people to be hurled from the pickup truck onto the highway.

The aftermath and ongoing investigation

Five survivors remained hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the crash, which is not uncommon in Indonesia due to several contributing factors.

Indonesia frequently experiences deadly traffic accidents due to a combination of overloaded vehiclesinadequate road safety measures and poor compliance with traffic regulations. These factors often lead to fatal crashes on the country’s busy highways.

The investigation aims to determine the specific circumstances that led to this tragic incident and to identify any potential measures that could prevent similar accidents in the future.

As the community mourns the loss of the 13 wedding guests, the investigation continues to shed light on the events that unfolded on that fateful Sunday afternoon.
