Aubrey Simmons’ journey into the world of journalism began with an unexpected twist. What started as a simple class choice during her sophomore year at White County High School (WCHS) evolved into a lifelong passion for storytelling and connecting with people.
Initially, Simmons envisioned a future in teaching. However, her perspective shifted dramatically when she enrolled in a journalism class, drawn by her enjoyment of the newspaper club during her freshman year. This decision opened doors to new skills and experiences that would shape her future.
Discovering the Power of Journalism
The journalism class introduced Simmons to a range of skills, including interviewing, AP style, photography, storytelling, and graphic design. What truly captivated her was the ability of journalism to connect with people on a deeper level. Each interview became a window into someone’s perspective, allowing her to witness and share their accomplishments and experiences.
Beyond the technical aspects, Simmons discovered the importance of building relationships and networking. She learned to ask genuine questions, consider different angles, and serve her community by telling stories with integrity. These values became the cornerstone of her approach to journalism.
Immersed in the World of Journalism
During her junior and senior years at WCHS, Simmons became deeply involved in various journalism projects. She contributed to the design and writing for the Spartan Voice newspaper and created ads for the yearbook. Additionally, she served as the editor of the Warrior Gameday Media Guides and took on the second volume of WCHS’s alumni magazine, The Oikos.
Simmons’ dedication and hard work were instrumental in her success, but she acknowledges the crucial role of her mentors. Drew Haston, Jason Crockett, and Hannah Randolph were among the many who guided and supported her throughout her journey. Without their help, Simmons believes she would not be where she is today.
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Opportunities
Simmons’ path was not without its challenges. She faced seasons of writer’s block and moments of doubt, wondering if she would ever pursue her passion in the way she envisioned. However, looking back, she sees how God’s hand opened doors for her that she never could have walked through on her own.
After much prayer, discussions with mentors, and long nights of reflection, Simmons took a leap of faith. This fall, she will begin her freshman year at Tennessee Tech University, studying communications with plans to pursue a career in public relations. She has also taken on the roles of yearbook editor and assistant magazine editor at Tech, eager to see where the next chapter of her journey will lead.
Most importantly, Simmons wants to share her ‘why’—her driving force behind her passion for communications. She believes that every person has a story worth telling, and behind every story is a person, an experience, and a purpose that deserves to be shared. Whether through journalism or public relations, Simmons aims to connect with people, serve communities, and tell stories with integrity. She is convinced that every single person’s words have the power to inform, encourage, and create change, and she hopes her words will make a positive impact.
