Arrests made in Coney Island, Orlando, and Pensacola shootings

In the first days of July 2026, three separate shooting incidents across the United States left communities in shock and authorities scrambling to bring those responsible to justice. From a family barbecue in Coney Island to targeted attacks in Orlando and Pensacola, these incidents highlight the persistent issue of gun violence in America.

In Brooklyn’s Coney Island, a family gathering turned tragic when a masked gunman opened fire, injuring eight people, including four children. Meanwhile, in Orlando, a daring police pursuit led to the arrest of three individuals suspected of shooting at people riding scooters. In Pensacola, a fatal shooting involving gang affiliations resulted in two arrests, with investigations continuing.

Coney Island shooting leaves eight injured, including four children

A Fourth of July family barbecue in Brooklyn’s Coney Island took a horrifying turn when a masked gunman opened fire in the courtyard of a residence at West 30th and Surf Avenue. The shooting, which occurred around 10:37 p.m. on Saturday, left eight people injured, including four children aged 6, 7, 12, and 14.

The victims included a 37-year-old man, a 33-year-old man, a 21-year-old woman, and a 25-year-old woman. Seven of the victims suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, while the 21-year-old victim was critically injured after being shot in the chest. A TEC-9-style firearm equipped with an extended magazine was recovered at the scene, along with 10 discharged shell casings.

The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Robert Smith, is being charged with multiple counts of attempted murder. New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed that detectives are investigating whether the shooting is connected to a gang-related homicide that occurred earlier in the week on the same block.

Orlando police pursue suspects in apartment complex shooting

In Orlando, Florida, authorities responded to a shooting at the Pendana at West Lakes Club Apartments around 3:50 p.m. on July 9, 2026. Surveillance footage showed shooters in a black car and black SUV firing at two people riding scooters inside the apartment complex. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Law enforcement officers located both suspect vehicles in the Pine Hills area. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office assisted with a traffic stop for the black car, leading to the arrest of two suspects: Jacorey Lowery, 20, and Quincy Despinosse, 18. Lowery is facing charges of attempted felony murder and discharging a firearm at residential property, while Despinosse is charged as a principal to attempted first-degree murder.

In a high-speed pursuit, Orlando officers attempted to pull over the driver of the black SUV, who refused to stop. The driver, whose name is withheld due to their age, is being held for principal to attempted felony murder with a firearm, fleeing and eluding law enforcement, resisting an officer without violence, and violation of probation.

Pensacola shooting leaves one dead, two arrested

A fatal shooting in Downtown Pensacola on July 9, 2026, resulted in the death of 19-year-old Phillip Sheppard Jr. and the injury of five others. Surveillance footage showed 26-year-old Nicholas Safford arguing with Sheppard before the shooting. Safford was seen meeting another male who provided him with a gun.

Safford was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, and firing a weapon in public. Lillian Meyers, a 25-year-old Pensacola woman, was also arrested on charges of tampering with evidence and accessory after the fact. She is accused of taking the gun from Safford and providing it to law enforcement.

Police Chief Eric Winstrom stated that Safford is likely the first individual to fire a gun and has connections to local gangs. Investigations are ongoing, with no one currently charged with Sheppard’s murder.

These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by communities across the United States in combating gun violence. As investigations continue, authorities remain committed to bringing those responsible to justice and ensuring the safety of their communities.
