Each month, the Administrative/Professional Council at Illinois State University highlights a staff member to foster a deeper connection within the community. This January, we shine the spotlight on Tracy Hanson, an academic advisor specializing in the Department of Criminal Justice Sciences (CJS).
Tracy has dedicated the last two decades to her role at ISU, supporting students as they navigate their educational paths. Her work goes beyond academics; it focuses on providing guidance, encouragement, and personal support to ensure that students thrive.
Understanding Tracy’s role
In her capacity as an academic advisor, Tracy has a multifaceted role encompassing a variety of responsibilities. She assists both criminal justice majors and minors, ensuring they remain on track for graduation while helping them connect their coursework to future career opportunities. Additionally, Tracy serves as a primary resource for incoming transfer students, guiding them from their initial acceptance to their first day of classes at ISU. She prefers to think of herself as a personal cheerleader for her students, reminding them that setbacks are merely detours, not dead ends.
Years of commitment
Tracy’s journey at ISU began in August 2005. Over the years, she has progressed through various roles, starting as a non-tenure track instructor, then becoming the internship coordinator before transitioning to her current position as an advisor within CJS. Her extensive experience has shaped her into a knowledgeable resource for both students and faculty.
What drives Tracy
When asked about her favorite aspect of working at ISU, Tracy highlights the people. She cherishes the relationships she has built with colleagues and the students who inspire her daily. Engaging conversations, moments of laughter, and shared challenges form the core of her rewarding experience. The dynamic environment of the university keeps her motivated and engaged.
A personal touch
Tracy has a surprising passion for the literary works of Jane Austen. She enjoys immersing herself in Austen’s narratives, often rewatching adaptations and rereading her novels. This love for literature parallels her commitment to fostering a love for learning among her students.
Life beyond work
Outside her professional responsibilities, Tracy finds joy in watching transformation videos on YouTube, particularly those focused on yard makeovers and extreme cleaning. These visual inspirations motivate her to stay organized and productive. She also appreciates quiet moments at home with her family and their beloved dogs, who weigh in at 65 and 135 pounds, respectively. Furthermore, Tracy enjoys exploring antique shops, finding it to be a therapeutic activity that allows her to unwind.
Words of wisdom
One quote that resonates deeply with her is, “Don’t let fear drive your decisions.” Tracy believes that fear often stems from the unknown, and avoiding challenges can lead to missed opportunities. By encouraging herself and others to confront their fears, she promotes a mindset of growth and exploration.
Future aspirations
If given the chance to travel, Tracy dreams of visiting Iceland, her husband’s birthplace, followed by a tour through England, Ireland, and Scotland. Her fascination with Tudor history makes the prospect of exploring castles particularly appealing.
Advice for new advisors
For those just embarking on their careers at ISU, Tracy has valuable advice: engage in networking. She encourages new advisors to seek mentorship, participate in committees, and attend conferences. The wealth of knowledge available at ISU is invaluable, and she has always found colleagues willing to lend a helping hand. Tracy reflects, “I have never had anyone tell me that they did not have time to help me.”
