In the vibrant realm of DIY crafting, creativity knows no bounds. This piece highlights the imaginative spirit of JustJobiwan, a dedicated member of the Sea of Thieves community. He has transformed his passion for gaming into a thriving creative outlet. From intricate foam props to dazzling costumes, JustJobiwan embodies the essence of a true crafting corsair, navigating the seas of imagination and artistry.
His journey into gaming began with the Atari 5200, where he was captivated by classics like Pitfall and Rescue on Fractalus. This initial spark ignited a lifelong love for gaming, eventually leading him to the Nintendo Entertainment System, which solidified his status as a devoted Nintendo fan. With a childhood filled with memorable gaming experiences, it was only natural for him to explore the enchanting world of Sea of Thieves.
From fandom to creation
Before venturing into the waters of Sea of Thieves, JustJobiwan had already developed a fondness for Rare, the studio behind some of his favorite childhood games. Although he didn’t consciously recognize the developers at the time, titles like Solar Jetman and Star Fox Adventures left a lasting impression. However, it was the countless hours spent with friends playing GoldenEye on the N64 that truly cemented his admiration for Rare, marking a pivotal part of his gaming history.
As a lover of pirate lore, JustJobiwan was immediately drawn to the Sea of Thieves community upon its launch. The cinematic trailer, filled with breathtaking visuals and enchanting sound design, beckoned him. The game promised an open world teeming with adventure, treasure, and peril, and he was ready to embark on that journey. His background as a practical effects artist allowed him to embrace the hand-crafted aesthetic of the game, harmonizing perfectly with his foam crafting skills.
First steps in crafting
Reflecting on his initial creations, JustJobiwan recalls making his first cosplay for the Insomnia Game Festival in April 2019. At that time, there were limited character options in Sea of Thieves, prompting him to craft a representation of his own pirate character, reminiscent of Guybrush Threepwood. This character’s style has remained unchanged since inception, showcasing the strong connection between the artist and his creation. Following that first project, he created numerous items, including skulls, lanterns, coins, and treasure chests, each a testament to his dedication and creativity.
Creative challenges and triumphs
Every crafting endeavor presents unique challenges, and for JustJobiwan, each project offers valuable lessons. He emphasizes that despite varying scales of his creations, the complexity often lies in execution. Some projects may appear simple but require intricate design work, while others may be grand in size yet straightforward in assembly. One particularly challenging endeavor was constructing the Chest of Legends, measuring approximately 65cm wide. This ambitious project involved multiple layers, foam shaping, intricate detailing, and a high-quality finish, complete with LED lighting.
Despite the hurdles faced, JustJobiwan finds fulfillment in the creative process. He enjoys the exhilarating moment when initial planning transforms into tangible pieces, revealing the bigger picture. His project featuring the LeChuck headpiece exemplifies this satisfaction. Replicating the skull mask and meticulously adding components to the beard was a rewarding experience.
Looking ahead
While his responsibilities as a father and a full-time worker can limit his crafting time, JustJobiwan remains optimistic about future projects. He acknowledges that the creative journey is ongoing, with new ideas always waiting in the wings. His passion for Sea of Thieves continues to inspire him, especially during memorable in-game experiences, such as the recent Return of the Damned adventure, where he and his friends engaged in epic battles, shaping the game world in real-time.
As a dedicated community member, JustJobiwan cherishes the camaraderie and shared experiences with fellow players. Whether crafting impressive props or enjoying gameplay with friends, his contributions to the Sea of Thieves community reflect his enthusiasm for both the game and the art of creation.
