Alex Cooper's Unwell Beverage Company, launched with much fanfare, is shutting down after just one year. Discover the reasons behind its failure.

The Unwell Beverage Company: Why Alex Cooper's Drink Line Failed

Alex Cooper, renowned for her popular podcast Call Her Daddy ventured into the beverage industry with her Unwell Beverage Company. However, the company’s journey was short-lived, as it announced its closure just a year after its launch. The beverage line, which included energy drinks and hydration beverages, failed to gain traction among consumers, leading to its eventual shutdown.

The Unwell Beverage Company was launched in partnership with Nestlé SA and was distributed primarily through Target. Despite initial excitement, the brand struggled to find its footing in the competitive beverage market. The company’s lack of clear branding and product differentiation contributed to its downfall.

Unwell Beverage Company: A Brief History

The Unwell Beverage Company was introduced as Unwell Hydration focusing on drinks with electrolytes, vitamins, and caffeine. However, the product line quickly shifted to include protein and energy drinks, creating confusion among consumers. Cooper aimed to cater to a market she felt was underserved by male-oriented sports drinks, stating that most beverages were marketed to men and professional athletes.

Despite Cooper’s efforts to position Unwell as a unique offering, the brand failed to stand out in a crowded market. The company’s inability to clearly define its target audience and product benefits led to a lack of consumer interest. Additionally, internal issues, including allegations of a toxic work environment, further tarnished the brand’s reputation.

The Downfall of Unwell Beverage Company

In, a report by Vanity Fair alleged that Cooper’s husband, Matt Kaplan, who co-founded the company, was running the business into the ground. The report claimed that Kaplan’s management style led to high staff turnover and a toxic work environment. Representatives for the couple denied these allegations, calling them a smear campaign.

Despite these challenges, the company managed to secure funding from Hollywood agent Patrick Whitesell, valuing the business at $500 million. However, this financial boost was not enough to save the struggling beverage line. Target, the primary distributor, decided not to re-up its supply, effectively sealing the company’s fate.

The Future of Alex Cooper’s Ventures

With the closure of the Unwell Beverage Company, Alex Cooper’s focus is likely to return to her successful podcast, Call Her Daddy. The podcast has been a significant part of her career, and she has also ventured into other business endeavors, including a $125 million deal to bring the Daddy Gang to SiriusXM.

Cooper’s journey in the beverage industry serves as a cautionary tale about the challenges of entering a competitive market without a clear strategy. While her podcast continues to thrive, the failure of the Unwell Beverage Company highlights the importance of market researchbrand differentiation and effective management in achieving business success.
