With over a decade of experience teaching fourth and fifth graders, she has made it her mission to nurture young minds and create a learning environment that extends beyond the classroom. Her journey as an educator is deeply intertwined with a family legacy of teaching, suggesting that her calling to this profession was almost destined.

Originally from Lawrenceville, Georgia, Caroline relocated to Western North Carolina after completing her studies at Montreat College. Since 2009, she has significantly influenced the local educational landscape. Recently, we spoke with Caroline about her teaching philosophy, her favorite subjects, and the impact she has on her students and the community.

Building relationships in the classroom

When asked about her motivation to enter the teaching profession, Caroline humorously remarks that teaching is “in my blood.” Growing up in a family of educators, her desire to help young people has always been evident. This dedication to guiding the next generation drives her daily efforts in the classroom.

Creating a supportive learning environment

One of the most rewarding aspects of Caroline’s role is the relationships she establishes with her students and their families. She views participation in her students’ educational journeys as a privilege. Caroline’s primary goal is for every student to understand their significance within her classroom. “More than just imparting knowledge, I want my students to feel loved and valued,” she states. This commitment to emotional support greatly enhances the learning experience for her students.

Passion for science and math

Throughout her teaching career, Caroline has cultivated a strong interest in teaching math and science. In recent years, she has concentrated on these subjects, particularly enjoying the exploration of fifth-grade science topics. She finds it rewarding to alter students’ perceptions of mathematics, addressing the common misconceptions they may harbor. Caroline frequently encounters students who believe they are not “math people,” and she takes pride in helping them recognize their potential.

Encouraging growth and self-discovery

One of Caroline’s favorite moments is witnessing her students apply lessons in real-time. “It’s amazing to see concepts I’ve taught start to click for them,” she shares. Caroline emphasizes that her students are the leaders and innovators of tomorrow, fostering an environment where they support and uplift one another. Observing her students demonstrate kindness and collaboration without prompts is particularly fulfilling for her.

Life outside the classroom

Beyond her teaching responsibilities, Caroline leads an active lifestyle. Whether hiking the scenic trails of Black Mountain or biking with friends, she fully embraces the beauty of Western North Carolina. Alongside her husband, she enjoys exploring the local culinary scene, often trying new restaurants to experience diverse flavors.

Additionally, Caroline plays a vital role in the community as the head coach of the Girls On the Run (GOTR) program at her school. This nonprofit organization aims to empower young girls by instilling self-confidence, fostering decision-making skills, and promoting healthy habits that will benefit them for years to come. Through her involvement with GOTR, Caroline continues to inspire and uplift the next generation of strong, confident women.

Caroline Clark embodies the heart and soul of teaching in Buncombe County. Her dedication to forming meaningful relationships with her students, coupled with her genuine passion for education, allows her to shape young minds while enriching the community around her.
