Principal Mike Dowdy Shares Insights on Leadership and Student Growth at Lake ESSC

In the heart of Granite City Community School District #9, one educator stands out for his dedication and innovative approach to education. Mike Dowdy, principal at Lake Educational Support Services Center (ESSC), has been making a significant impact since joining the school two years ago. His journey from Coolidge Junior High School to Lake ESSC is a testament to his commitment to student success and community building.

Dowdy’s career has been marked by a consistent focus on helping students achieve their goals. His transition from teaching and assistant principal roles at Coolidge to leading Lake ESSC has shaped his leadership style, emphasizing persistence and support for students’ aspirations.

From Coolidge to Lake: A Leadership Journey

Dowdy’s extensive experience at Coolidge Junior High School, where he spent 16 years as a social studies teacher and assistant principal, has been instrumental in shaping his leadership approach. ‘Every day at Lake is a learning experience for me,’ Dowdy shares. ‘My leadership style has not really changed. I want to help students find success in any way that I can, regardless of my role.’ This philosophy has driven him to consistently find ways to support students in meeting their goals, a practice he honed during his tenure at Coolidge.

The Vibrant Atmosphere of Summer School

One of the highlights of Dowdy’s year is overseeing the K-7 Summer School at Lake. Initially nervous about working with younger students, Dowdy has found the experience incredibly rewarding. ‘Summer school at Lake is an extremely enjoyable experience for me,’ he admits. The energy and excitement of the young students have been a source of inspiration. ‘Seeing the genuine excitement they have for anything from a high five to a prize off the “Woot Woot Wagon” has been rejuvenating,’ Dowdy notes.

Embracing the Spirit of ‘Lake Life’

The phrase ‘Lake Life’ encapsulates the unique community spirit at Lake ESSC. For Dowdy, it means fostering a sense of belonging and support. ‘Every person here is bought in on the idea of helping kids,’ he explains. This collective effort resonates with the students, helping them understand that everyone is on the same team. Dowdy particularly enjoys witnessing the relationships that develop over time, as students who initially arrive on less-than-ideal terms are welcomed and supported by the dedicated staff.

Lessons from the Wrestling Mat

Dowdy’s background as a collegiate wrestler at Illinois College has instilled in him valuable lessons in discipline, perseverance, and leadership. ‘Wrestling provides many life lessons that translate to any career path,’ he reflects. The sport’s emphasis on hard work and personal responsibility has prepared him to tackle the challenges of being a principal. ‘While every day at Lake is not easy, the work ethic that wrestling requires has helped prepare me to take on all challenges,’ Dowdy states.

Celebrating Successes and Looking Ahead

Dowdy takes pride in numerous achievements during his time at Lake ESSC. From helping students improve their emotional control to establishing a STEM and computer lab and organizing a Career Fair, his initiatives have had a tangible impact. ‘Seeing our students walk across the stage at graduation every year is also an extremely rewarding experience and a sign of the success of this program,’ he shares.

Beyond his professional life, Dowdy enjoys spending time with his family, watching his daughter play volleyball, and his son play baseball. He also finds solace in fishing and shooting his bow, activities that help him unwind and recharge.
