Pope Leo XIV Celebrates Completion of Sagrada Família's Tallest Tower

The Sagrada FamíliaBarcelona’s iconic basilica, reached a historic milestone on June 10, 2026, as Pope Leo XIV blessed its newly completed Tower of Jesus Christ. This event, part of the pope’s weeklong visit to Spain, commemorated the 100th anniversary of architect Antoni Gaudí’s death and celebrated the basilica’s status as the world’s tallest church.

The basilica, a masterpiece of modernist architecturehas been under construction for 144 years. Gaudí, who dedicated 43 years of his life to the project, envisioned a spiritual pilgrimage through its intricate designs. The Tower of Jesus Christ, standing at 566 feet, is the tallest of 18 towers adorning the basilica.

The Significance of the Tower Blessing

The blessing of the Tower of Jesus Christ marked a major step in the basilica’s long journey toward completion. Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, emphasized the basilica’s ongoing nature during his homily. “Much more than a monument, the Basilica of the Sagrada Família remains a work in progress today” he said, highlighting its symbolic promise and the path of faith.

The event drew a massive crowd, with 9,000 people inside the basilica and 120,000 outside. Among the attendees were Spain’s King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The pope lit a candle at Gaudí’s grave and blessed the new tower, which was illuminated with fireworks and drone lights forming Gaudí’s face in the night sky.

Gaudí’s Legacy and the Path to Sainthood

Antoni Gaudí, often referred to as “God’s architect” was a devout Catholic whose radical designs were initially mocked but later celebrated. His work on the Sagrada Família was far from complete when he was tragically killed by a tram in June 1926. Gaudí’s vision for the basilica was to create a bible in stonedepicting scenes from everyday life alongside religious imagery.

The Vatican has put Gaudí on the path to sainthood, with Pope Francis declaring him “venerable” in recognition of his “heroic virtues.” The Association for the Beatification of Antoni Gaudí hopes for his beatification this year, pending the recognition of a miracle.

The Impact on Barcelona and Beyond

Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Barcelona was part of a broader tour of Spain, where he addressed various social and political issues. He visited a high-security prison, emphasizing the possibility of change and redemption. The pope also spoke out against war and the abandonment of those in need, aligning his message with the basilica’s symbolic promise of hope and unity.

The Sagrada Família, visited by about 5 million people annually, is not only a religious site but also a global icon. Its completion, though still a decade away for the Glory facade, marks a significant achievement in architectural history. The basilica’s towering presence in Barcelona’s skyline serves as a reminder of Gaudí’s enduring legacy and the ongoing journey of faith.
