New York Fashion Week has long been a stage for established names, but beneath the surface, a vibrant undercurrent of independent talent is reshaping the landscape. As the spring 2027 season approaches, a cohort of innovative designers is bringing a renewed sense of excitement and authenticity to the event. These creators, each with a unique story and perspective, are proving that the spirit of New York Fashion Week is alive and thriving.
From first-time runway debuts to intimate studio presentations, these designers are showcasing their artistry on their own terms. Their work reflects the grit and diversity of the city they call home, offering a refreshing contrast to the more homogenized collections that have dominated in recent years. Here, we highlight six of these remarkable women who are making their mark on the fashion world.
Aisling Camps: From Engineering to Fashion
Aisling Camps, a 2026 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist, is set to debut her first on-calendar runway show on September 14. Her journey from mechanical engineering to fashion design is a testament to her adaptability and creativity. Known for her chunky cable-knit pullovers, open-weave bra tops, and macramé hoodies, Camps brings a technical precision to her designs that reflects her engineering background.
“Design is design,” Camps says, “only now I make clothing as opposed to robots or an HVAC system.” Her Trinidadian heritage inspires her beachy, breathable aesthetic, as well as her resilient work ethic. “When you come from somewhere where you don’t have access to everything, you make do with what is available,” she explains. This philosophy has driven her to carve out a niche in the competitive New York fashion scene.
Meruert Tolegen: A Blend of Antiquities and Modernity
Meruert Tolegen, a Kazakhstan-born designer, launched her womenswear line after starting with a children’s clothing boutique. Her work is characterized by lace panniers, inky florals, and 18th-century tailcoats, blending antiquities with a modern, playful yet macabre twist. Tolegen’s spring 2027 collection will be presented in two parts, with an abridged edit in New York and a full off-calendar runway in Paris.
“There’s something humorous to me about artistic, weird, and off-putting clothing,” Tolegen says. Her designs often feature bustle-hipped corset dresses and jet-black horsehair jackets, reflecting her Kazakh heritage and a melancholic sensibility. Despite the challenges of balancing her design career with family life, Tolegen remains committed to her unique vision.
6397: A Fusion of Experience and Innovation
Stella Ishii and Lizzie Owens, the dynamic duo behind 6397, bring a wealth of experience to their collaborative brand. Ishii, co-owner of the legendary Soho showroom the NEWS, has a storied history in retail, introducing iconic brands like Comme des Garçons and Martin Margiela to the U.S. Owens, with her background in menswear, adds a fresh perspective to the womenswear line.
“Collectively, we’re studied enough to know everything,” Owens says. 6397, named after the alphanumeric spelling of NEWS on a phone keypad, started as a line of unpretentious basics but has evolved into a more fashion-forward collection. The brand’s conscious evolution reflects the designers’ commitment to innovation and quality.
