Meet Drea Coello, founder of D.R.E.A. Racing and Powder Puff champion

When Drea Coello first stepped onto the desert track, she imagined a single competition and not the expansive community she now curates. Nearly seventeen years later, the former racer-turned-entrepreneur has woven her love for off-road racing into a multifaceted venture called D.R.E.A. Racing. The organization not only fuels her own competitive spirit but also serves as a conduit for mentorship, sponsorship, and charitable outreach. Over the past three years, Coello has steered this platform from concept to a recognized name within the specialty-equipment arena, earning the #SheIsSEMA spotlight for her pioneering contributions.

At the heart of her initiative lies the annual Powder Puff Race for a Cure an event that blends high-octane thrills with a purpose-driven mission. Designed explicitly for women, the race raises awareness and funds for breast and gynecological cancers while providing an inclusive environment for both seasoned drivers and newcomers. This year marks the third edition, and Coello is already mapping out additional races and community-building opportunities for the upcoming season, amplifying the cause and expanding the network of female racers.

From a Single Race to a Dedicated Racing Platform

Coello’s journey began with a solitary desert competition that ignited a lifelong obsession. Recognizing a gap in the market for a women-centered racing circuit, she launched D.R.E.A. Racing three years ago. The name—an acronym for Desert Racing Enthusiasts Association—embodies her vision of a supportive, skill-building community. As the owner and race director, Coello oversees everything from sponsor outreach to logistical coordination. She emphasizes that each detail, whether it’s timing the start line or arranging safety crews, contributes to a seamless experience that encourages participation and fosters confidence among women riders.

The Powder Puff Race: Empowerment Meets Advocacy

The Powder Puff Race for a Cure has evolved beyond a mere competition; it is a rallying point for gender equity and health advocacy. Participants race on a purpose-built course while donors contribute directly to cancer research initiatives. Coello’s role expands to crafting the narrative that links each lap to a tangible impact on breast and gynecological health. Because of her relentless promotion, the event now attracts regional sponsors, media attention, and a growing cadre of female athletes who view the race as a platform for personal triumph and societal contribution.

Breaking Barriers: Mentors, Qualities, and Advice

Operating in a traditionally male-dominated sport has presented Coello with distinct hurdles. She recounts moments where her expertise was questioned, prompting her to double down on performance and professionalism. Her perseverance is anchored in three core traits: passion which sparked her involvement; motivation which sustains her through logistical challenges; and determination which fuels her resolve when obstacles arise. Mentorship has been pivotal—late Tommy Russell taught her race organization fundamentals, Gail Lynn championed her vision for a women-focused circuit, and Matt Helton provides technical counsel. Even outside the arena, her husband Robert offers personal support that she credits as essential to her success.

When asked for the most valuable career counsel she has received, Coello highlights the mantra of refusing to let fear dictate decisions. She stresses that setbacks are learning opportunities, and the willingness to take calculated risks ultimately drives progress. Although she never imagined a future behind the wheel, the community, camaraderie, and the ability to make a difference have kept her anchored in the industry. When not planning races or competing, Coello enjoys traveling with her husband, crafting memorable gatherings, and continuing to build bridges between the racing world and charitable causes.
