The tranquil afternoon in downtown Minneapolis was shattered on Wednesday when a mass shooter opened fire at the Loring Towers apartment building. The incident, which began at approximately 4:36 pm, resulted in the deaths of two civilians and injuries to four others, including two police officers.
The Minneapolis Police Department received the first distress call reporting a shooting at the affordable housing community. Upon arrival, officers discovered a grim scene with multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. The situation escalated as officers followed the sound of gunfire to an upper floor, where they encountered a haze that significantly impaired their visibility.
The chaotic scene and law enforcement response
In the ensuing confrontation, two officers were shot, with one sustaining a gunshot wound to the stomach and the other a non-life-threatening injury to the leg. A third officer also suffered an injury, though the specifics remain unclear. Despite the severity of their injuries, all officers are expected to make full recoveries.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) swiftly responded to the scene, joining local law enforcement in their efforts to secure the area. The FBI also pledged its support, offering any necessary resources to assist local authorities.
The nearby University of St. Thomas and the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure. The lockdowns were lifted around 6:15 pm and 6:20 pm, respectively, after the situation was deemed safe.
Witness accounts and the aftermath
Witnesses to the horrific event provided chilling accounts of the shooting. Anthony Strong who was smoking behind the apartment building, heard a series of gunshots and later saw a property manager and other victims on the ground. He also witnessed an officer being carried out with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Umecua Agnew a resident of the building, was in the elevator when the shots rang out. She and another woman quickly grabbed a child and sought refuge in Agnew’s apartment on the eighth floor. The sound of gunfire continued, and Agnew was eventually led to safety by another resident.
The Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed his support for the responding law enforcement officers, stating that state officials were on the ground to provide assistance. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison called the situation horrifying and offered his support to the victims and their families.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event, the focus remains on the victims, the injured officers, and the ongoing investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
