The Labor Day weekend was marred by violence in two major U.S. cities, as separate shooting incidents left multiple people injured. In Chicago, three individuals were seriously wounded in a early morning shooting on the city’s West Side. Meanwhile, in Brooklyn, three more were injured in two separate shootings along the West Indian American Day Parade route.
The incidents highlight the ongoing challenges of gun violence in urban areas and have left communities and authorities seeking answers.
Chicago shooting leaves three in serious condition
In Chicago, the violence unfolded around 7:11 a.m. on Sunday, September 6, 2026, in the 600 block of South Independence Boulevard. According to the Chicago Police Department, two individuals exited a dark-colored sedan and opened fire on a group of people standing outside.
The victims included a 25-year-old man who was shot multiple times and rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition. A 28-year-old woman was also shot and taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition. Additionally, a 30-year-old man sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.
The assailants fled the scene in an unknown direction, and as of now, no suspects have been apprehended. The incident remains under investigation by area detectives.
This shooting was part of a troubling trend over the Labor Day weekend, with a total of 15 people shot and three killed in Chicago as of Sunday morning.
Brooklyn shootings injure three during parade celebrations
Across the country, in Brooklyn, New York, two separate shootings occurred along and near the West Indian American Day Parade route on Monday, September 7, 2026. The first incident took place at 4:02 p.m. near 800 Nostrand Avenue, within the boundaries of the NYPD’s 77th Precinct.
A 24-year-old male victim was shot in the buttocks and transported to Kings County Hospital, where he reportedly remains in stable condition. Authorities took a person of interest into custody shortly after the incident.
Minutes later, a second shooting broke out nearby within the 71st Precinct at Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue. A 37-year-old female was shot in the leg, and a 19-year-old male sustained graze wounds to both legs during the incident. Both victims were transported to Kings County Hospital in stable condition.
The NYPD has not yet released additional details regarding potential suspects in the second shooting, nor have they released the identities or updated conditions of the two victims wounded along Eastern Parkway.
Earlier on the same day, three men were hospitalized following a stabbing that occurred just before 6 a.m. near the intersection of Utica Avenue and Carroll Street. The victims suffered severe injuries, with two men stabbed in the neck and currently recovering in stable condition. The third victim was stabbed in the face and was taken to the hospital in critical condition but is now in stable condition. No arrests have been made in connection with the stabbing.
Both shooting incidents remain under investigation, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
