The tranquil community of Grand Haven Township, Michigan, was shattered on Friday, July 24, 2026, by a tragic event that claimed the lives of an entire family. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that eight individuals, including six children aged between 5 and 15, were found deceased in their home following a fire. The incident is being investigated as a murder-suicide.
The family consisted of Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, his wife Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, and their six children. The children included four boys and two girls, with four being biological and two adopted. The names of the children have not been publicly released.
The sequence of events
First responders were initially alerted to the area around 8:30 a.m. due to reports of smoke, but no fire was located at that time. Later, around 11:45 a.m., firefighters returned to the scene after receiving reports of white smoke emanating from a residence. Upon entering the home, they discovered the eight family members deceased in various bedrooms throughout the house.
Autopsies revealed that all eight victims had sustained gunshot wounds. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation, but authorities believe it was intentionally set in multiple locations within the home. The family’s pets also perished in the fire.

Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Captain Jake Sparks described the incident as an unspeakable tragedy and stated that the investigation shows it was a murder-suicide, with the fire being started after the murders. The weapon used was a handgun, which is believed to have been registered.
