From Paragliding Accident to Advocacy: Jared Potter's Story with Unite 2 Fight Paralysis

In, Jared Potter’s life took an unexpected turn during a paragliding accident that resulted in a T12/L1 spinal cord injury (SCI). This life-altering event led him to discover Unite 2 Fight Paralysis (U2FP) an organization that has become a cornerstone in his journey towards recovery and advocacy.

Jared’s introduction to U2FP came through Quinn Brett, whom he had been following on Instagram for years. Intrigued by Quinn’s work and the organization’s Annual Science and Advocacy Symposium Jared attended the event in Atlanta in 2026. This symposium opened his eyes to the complexities of SCI and the groundbreaking work U2FP is doing to accelerate recovery.

Understanding the Complexity of SCI

The symposium served as a reality check for Jared, helping him grasp the intricacies of his injury and the current state of SCI research. Despite the overwhelming amount of information, he was inspired by U2FP’s efforts, particularly their legislative funding initiatives, which have successfully secured $83 million to date. This realization solidified his belief in the organization’s mission and led him to become a monthly donor shortly after the event.

Advocating for Functional Recovery

Jared’s advocacy is driven by a focus on functional recovery emphasizing improvements in areas such as independent breathing, hand function, and autonomic regulation. He believes that progress in these areas is crucial for enhancing the daily lives of individuals with SCI, regardless of injury level. Jared’s personal experience with nerve pain management through a spinal cord stimulator underscores the importance of ongoing research and innovation in this field.

When faced with skepticism about the value of SCI research, Jared shifts the conversation to the tangible benefits of improved function. He highlights the impact of advancements in bowel, bladder, and sexual function, inviting others to join him in supporting U2FP’s mission. “I put this before the naysayers and then I invite them in,” Jared states, emphasizing the importance of community and shared purpose.

The Power of Community

One of the most valuable aspects of Jared’s involvement with U2FP is the community it has provided. Through monthly Social Crew calls Jared stays engaged and connected with like-minded individuals. He encourages others, especially younger people with SCI, to get involved by following U2FP on social media, signing up for emails, and attending these calls. “Just get in the room – everyone is great,” Jared advises, highlighting the supportive and inclusive nature of the U2FP community.

Raising Awareness and Funds

Jared’s commitment to U2FP extends beyond financial support. This fall, he will be racing with Team U2FP in the Twin Cities Marathon, an event that accepts all kinds of adaptive mobility devices. This participation not only allows him to raise funds and awareness but also to connect with friends and U2FP staff on a personal level. “These folks are doing great work!” Jared exclaims, expressing his admiration for the organization’s dedication.

U2FP is currently aiming to add 33 new monthly donors in honor of the $33 million they helped restore for SCI research at the federal level. Jared, a proud monthly donor for the past two years, encourages others to join him in supporting this vital cause. “Five, ten, twenty, fifty dollars a month (or more) adds up to real advocacy, real research, real change,” he asserts, emphasizing the collective impact of individual contributions.

Additionally, Jared mentions upcoming incentives and prizes for new monthly donors, as well as testimonials from other supporters within the U2FP community. These initiatives aim to further engage and motivate individuals to contribute to the organization’s mission.
