The tragic tale of a German family’s vacation turning into a nightmare has reached its legal conclusion. A Turkish court has recently handed down prison sentences to four individuals involved in the poisoning deaths of the Bocek family, who were staying at the Harbour Suites Old City hotel in Istanbul’s Fatih district.
The family, consisting of parents Servet and Cigdem Bocek and their two young children, Kadir Muhammet and Masal, fell ill during their November 2026 stay. What initially seemed like a case of food poisoning was later revealed to be exposure to the highly toxic insecticide phosphine gas.
The Tragic Unfolding of Events
The family’s health rapidly deteriorated after their arrival. They first sought medical help on November 12, complaining of nausea and vomiting. Tragically, their conditions worsened, leading to the deaths of their children on November 13 and 14, followed by their mother on November 14, and finally their father on November 17.
Their deaths sparked widespread concern about hotel safety standards in Turkey, particularly in light of another tragic incident in January 2026, where a fire at a ski resort hotel in northwest Turkey claimed 78 lives.
The Legal Proceedings and Convictions
The Istanbul court found the hotel’s owner, Hakan Oglak guilty of causing multiple deaths through negligence. He was sentenced to 13 years and four months in prison. The owners of DSS Pest Control, Zeki Kisi and his son Serkan Kisi received the harshest sentences of 18 years each. The company employee, Dogan Cagferoglu was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
All four convicted individuals are expected to appeal their sentences. Notably, two hotel reception employees who were also charged were acquitted.
The Investigation and the Toxic Substance
Initial investigations pointed towards food poisoning as the cause of the family’s illness. However, further inspections revealed traces of phosphine gas on towels, masks, and swab samples taken from the hotel. Phosphine is a highly toxic substance that can cause severe respiratory problems and organ damage.
The court convicted the defendants of causing death through conscious negligence a legal finding under Turkish law that applies when individuals knowingly disregard a significant risk that results in fatalities. Lawyers representing the victims’ family had argued for murder convictions while defense attorneys sought acquittals. The court ultimately rejected both requests, imposing lengthy prison sentences on four of the accused.
The Harbour Suites Old City hotel, where the tragic incident occurred, is one of many low-cost hotels located near popular tourist attractions such as the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. The hotel has since been closed.
