Cruising has become a beloved pastime for many, offering a unique blend of relaxation and adventure. Among the myriad of destinations, Alaska stands out as a bucket-list experience. Recently, I had the privilege of exploring the Last Frontier aboard the Celebrity Solstice, a ship that combines elegance with a commitment to exceptional service.
The Celebrity Solstice, freshly revitalized, set sail from Vancouver in May, promising an unforgettable journey through the Alaskan wilderness. As a seasoned cruiser, I was eager to experience the unique allure of this northern destination.
The Ideal Cruise Companion
Unlike other cruise lines that cater to families, the Celebrity Solstice offered a more mature atmosphere. The absence of screaming children made for a serene environment, perfect for couples and friend groups. I traveled with one of my closest friends, and our dynamic made the experience even more enjoyable.
Sailing as a duo offered numerous advantages. We could easily secure dining reservations, explore the ship’s many lounges and bars, and participate in the endless social activities. The cruise provided ample opportunities to meet fellow passengers, whether in the hot tub, at the daily LGBTQ+ meetup, or during the entertaining Finish That Lyric contest.
Luxurious Accommodations
The Celebrity Solstice offers a variety of staterooms, but the AquaClass rooms are a standout feature. These wellness-focused accommodations are spacious and feature large balconies, providing ample room for relaxation and storage. The bathroom, with its stand-up spa shower and ample counter space, was a particular highlight.
The beds in the AquaClass rooms are exceptionally comfortable, ensuring a restful night’s sleep. The climate controls and blackout options allowed us to create the perfect sleep environment. As a self-proclaimed terrible sleeper, my friend was pleasantly surprised by the quality of rest she experienced.
Culinary Delights and Refreshing Beverages
The Celebrity Solstice boasts a variety of dining options, from the main dining rooms to the specialty restaurants. Trattoria Rossa offered delicious Italian cuisine, while Fine Cut Steakhouse served one of the best filet mignons I’ve ever tasted. Murano, the upscale French restaurant, was also a must-visit.
AquaClass sailors have access to the exclusive Blu restaurant, which quickly became a favorite. The service was stellar, and the views from the window seats were spectacular. The ship also offers a premium drink package, allowing guests to sample a variety of cocktails and wines without worry.
The World Class Bar is a great spot for craft cocktails, while the Sunset Bar offers stunning views. The Parlour, with its hundreds of games, was a favorite spot for relaxation and entertainment.
Unforgettable Experiences On and Off the Ship
The Celebrity Solstice offers a wide range of activities to keep guests entertained. From live performances and interactive games to spectacular shows and dance parties, there’s never a dull moment. The Solarium, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, is the perfect place to relax and take in the Alaskan views.
One of the highlights of the cruise was the approach to the Hubbard Glacier. The glacier’s stunning blue color and massive size made for an unforgettable experience. The Solarium and the fitness center offered the best views of this natural wonder.
Getting off the ship is one of the great parts of an Alaskan sailing. In Juneau, be sure to visit Jellyfish Donuts and Amalga Distillery. In Icy Straight Point, take the cable car up the mountain for breathtaking views. Ketchikan is a charming town with plenty to explore, including the historic Red Light District.
For a truly unforgettable experience, consider taking a helicopter to the Mendenhall Glacier. The breathtaking views and the opportunity to land on the glacier are experiences you won’t soon forget.
The Celebrity Solstice offers a wide range of activities and excursions, ensuring that there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re looking to relax in the spa, explore the Alaskan wilderness, or simply enjoy the stunning views, this cruise has it all.
