Sami Segal, a junior at Tulane University, is immersing himself in psychology with a minor in social work. He is currently interning at GiGi’s Playhouse in New Orleans, a center known for its warmth, joy, and inspiration. Originally from the suburbs of Philadelphia and now residing at the Jersey Shore, Segal has found a second home in New Orleans during his studies.
His dedication to supporting individuals with developmental differences is deeply personal, influenced by his brother, Zacky. This relationship has fostered in him a strong commitment to values such as service, inclusion, and advocacy. These principles not only guide his academic endeavors but also shape his aspirations to create a lasting impact in the community.
Engaging with the community at GiGi’s Playhouse
Outside of academic pursuits, I am actively involved in various activities that promote my well-being and fulfillment. My interests encompass yoga, dance, Pilates, and long walks, all of which contribute positively to my health. Additionally, I value the time spent with family and friends. Writing is another passion; I specifically enjoy documenting significant experiences and amplifying voices within the community.
My involvement at GiGi’s Playhouse has provided a unique opportunity to connect with others and promote inclusion. On Wednesday evenings, I assist with GiGiMOVE: Just Dance, a fitness program designed for teens and adults. This initiative has proven to be both enjoyable and rewarding, allowing participants to express themselves through movement. I am also looking forward to the upcoming literacy tutoring sessions, where I will help individuals develop confidence and independence.
Making an impact through family initiatives
In addition to my work at GiGi’s, I am proud to be involved with The Guided Tour, a vacation program for adults with developmental disabilities. Founded by my grandfather and now continued by my father, this initiative has reinforced my belief that inclusion is a lifelong journey. It is essential to provide opportunities for connection and joy that extend beyond childhood into adulthood.
Broadening horizons through travel and advocacy
During my time abroad, I initiated an inclusive café project, which focused on visiting cafés and restaurants that employ individuals with disabilities. This project, inspired by my brother, is rooted in the belief that inclusion should permeate all aspects of society, including our everyday dining experiences. By showcasing these inclusive spaces, I aimed to promote awareness and appreciation for diverse abilities.
Continuing the advocacy on campus
At Tulane University, my active participation in organizations such as Special Olympics and Best Buddies has been instrumental in advocating for inclusion. These programs have enabled me to build meaningful relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds, contributing to a culture that values diversity and understanding.
My internship experience at GiGi’s Playhouse has further enriched my journey. Engaging with participants, their families, and fellow staff members has provided invaluable lessons. I am grateful to be part of this vibrant community, which fosters growth and connection. I look forward to the upcoming moments of celebration and learning together.
