For nearly three decades, the art of storytelling has been my passion, especially in television. Each setback in Hollywood prompted a search for solace through travel, a remedy that often rejuvenated my spirit. This desire to escape inspired me to write a comedic memoir, What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding, which captures my solo adventures as a single woman. Its popularity allowed me to adapt it into a television series, a process that was both enchanting and filled with challenges.
The journey to create the show involved numerous unexpected challenges. The initial pilot was filmed in Latvia, depicting a girls’ trip to Russia. However, the geopolitical situation changed significantly following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which made our original concept untenable. As a result, we shifted our focus and filmed a second pilot in the stunning landscapes of Iceland. Subsequently, I moved my family to Argentina for four months to complete filming. Just as we finished production, the entertainment industry encountered a major writers’ strike, complicating the release of our project and ultimately leading to its shelving.
A surprising return to familiar ground
Amidst ongoing challenges, a surprising opportunity arose. I received an invitation to return to my previous show, Only Murders in the Building. This came during a particularly difficult period when financial stability felt out of reach. Engaging with a cherished project provided a creative refuge, allowing me to reconnect with familiar faces and themes. However, I soon recognized that remaining in the shadow of a well-established series could not serve as a sustainable path forward.
Seeking new horizons
After two years, I made the decision to pursue new adventures beyond Hollywood. The competitive nature of the industry proved challenging, with numerous writers vying for the same positions. Transitioning to a remote working environment heightened my uncertainty regarding the future—until a call from Abercrombie & Kent changed everything. This esteemed travel company, known for its luxurious safaris and commitment to conservation, offered me the chance to explore Kenya and Uganda—a dream I had long harbored.
As I departed for this press trip, the experience of boarding a plane solo after a long hiatus was both liberating and emotional. Walking through the bustling airport, I felt a profound sense of release, surrounded by travelers from all walks of life. This journey would not merely be a getaway; it represented a significant opportunity for personal renewal.
Experiencing the wilds of Africa
During this transformative journey, I encountered fellow adventurers, including experienced journalists and a knowledgeable public relations guide from Abercrombie & Kent. Initially apprehensive, I soon felt a sense of camaraderie develop as we collectively anticipated the experiences awaiting us. Our expedition led us to the expansive Maasai Mara, where we took to the skies in a bush plane operated by skilled female pilots. Upon landing, the breathtaking landscape enveloped us, and we were greeted at the luxurious Olonana Lodge, situated along the banks of the Mara River.
Immersing in nature
At the lodge, the surrounding wildlife created a captivating atmosphere. Hippos played in the river, while giraffes crossed our path during breakfast. Each moment highlighted the beauty of nature, contrasting sharply with the chaos I had left behind. One afternoon, instead of relaxing, I found myself engaged with curious monkeys, drawn into their playful antics. The open design of my accommodations allowed wildlife to approach my doorstep, fostering a unique connection with the environment.
Our excursions featured thrilling game drives, where we encountered both the majestic Big Five and the lesser-known Ugly Five. However, just as I began to embrace this experience, I received unsettling news: my agent was leaving the industry. This prompted a reflection on the uncertain future of my career.
Transformative encounters in Uganda
The next leg of our safari took us to Uganda, where we journeyed through picturesque tea and coffee plantations to the exclusive Gorilla Forest Lodge. Situated within the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, this unique lodge offered a front-row seat to the majestic mountain gorillas. The conservation efforts here exemplify how tourism can benefit both wildlife and local communities. Every stay supports vital projects, including healthcare initiatives and women’s entrepreneurship.
Tracking gorillas was an unforgettable experience, allowing us to observe these gentle giants in their natural habitat. Each encounter highlighted the significance of conservation and the delicate balance between human interaction and wildlife protection. I witnessed firsthand the dedication of local guides, who worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of the gorillas while allowing visitors to appreciate their splendor.
A new perspective on resilience
This journey through Africa was both a physical adventure and a profound metaphor for resilience. Just as the elephants in Bwindi adapted to their changing environment, I recognized the importance of embracing change and evolving in the face of adversity. The lessons learned during this trip echoed my own experiences navigating challenges in Hollywood, underscoring that adaptation is crucial for survival.
As my trip concluded, I returned home with a renewed sense of purpose. The industry may be shrinking and evolving, but my time in Africa instilled a sense of hope. The world is rich with possibilities, and I am prepared to explore them, carrying the spirit of adventure and adaptability into whatever lies ahead.
