The Role: A Snapshot
As a Breaking News Politics Reporter, you will be responsible for covering the fast-paced world of DC politics. Your days will be filled with reporting on legislative battles, policy shifts, elections, and key political figures. You will write about the big political stories of the day, spot trending news, and bring sharp, authoritative coverage of how decisions in the capital shape the nation.
Your responsibilities will include landing interviews with power brokers in DC politics, covering legislative battles, and breaking exclusive stories. You will need to build and maintain a strong network of sources, from lawmakers and lobbyists to administration and campaign officials. Staying on top of political developments in real time and filing timely, accurate copy will be crucial.
Key Responsibilities
Your primary focus will be on reporting and writing breaking news and enterprise stories on DC politics and government actions. You will need to spot news from political interviews, speeches, and social media postings. Using public records, FOIA requests, and social media to surface and verify stories will be part of your toolkit.
Collaboration is key. You will work closely with editors and colleagues to produce fast, engaging coverage across digital and social platforms. Your ability to find fresh angles on widely covered issues and break exclusive stories will set you apart.
Requirements: What We’re Looking For
To excel in this role, you need a minimum of three years of newsroom reporting experience, with a focus on DC or political coverage. Experience writing about the White House and Congress and building sources within the Trump administration is a plus. You should be fast, accurate, and efficient, with strong editorial judgment and writing skills under tight deadlines.
Flexibility is crucial. You must be available to work Sunday to Thursday and be prepared to work evenings and irregular hours as news demands. This role will be based in the Washington, DC Bureau.
