The political landscape in Ohio was shaken on Sunday when an armed individual disrupted a campaign event for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton at the annual Canfield Fair. The incident, which resulted in injuries and the arrest of the suspect, has sparked widespread condemnation and raised concerns about political violence.
The suspect, identified as Patrick Havas 38, was taken into custody by the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office. The confrontation occurred around 2:30 p.m. as Acton was engaging with supporters in the Mahoning County Democratic Party’s tent. Despite the chaos, Acton remained unharmed and continued to assist those injured during the incident.
The Incident Unfolds
According to authorities, Havas approached the tent with a cellphone set up to record the visit. As he entered, he began pushing through the crowd, knocking two people to the ground. Acton’s security detail, comprised of Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers quickly intervened. Upon arresting Havas, law enforcement officers recovered two handguns, a set of brass knuckles, and a Taser. Notably, Havas did not brandish any of the weapons during the confrontation.
Havas was subsequently charged with disorderly conduct and two counts of assault. The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating the circumstances leading up to the incident. The extent of injuries to the fairgoers involved has not yet been disclosed.
Political Reactions and Condemnations
The incident drew immediate condemnation from both sides of the political aisle. Acton’s campaign spokesperson, Addie Bullock expressed gratitude for the swift action of law enforcement and emphasized the need to stand against political violence. “This kind of violence has no place in Ohio,” Bullock stated. “Dr. Acton will always stand up to the chaos, hate, and vitriol that pits us against one another.”
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine a Republican, also weighed in on the incident. “Violence or the threat of violence at political or public events is always unacceptable,” DeWine said. “This case is now in the hands of law enforcement and will be investigated thoroughly.” DeWine, who previously worked with Acton during the COVID-19 pandemic, expressed relief that she was unharmed.
Republican gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy who was also scheduled to visit the fair, condemned the incident. “Candidates should be able to meet with voters without having to worry about threats or violence,” said Connie Luck Ramaswamy’s spokesperson. “What happened today is completely unacceptable and has no place in politics.”
